I’ve got some upbeat jazz songs for you!

The Music and The Mirror- A Chorus Line

All The Things You Are- from Very Warm for May (carmen mcrae’s version)

I am a 13 year old alto (I think. But it's closer to that than soprano) and I will be auditioning for Into the Woods. I'm going for Little Red. Do you have some songs that might help me out with that, but not seem too forward, like, "I'm auditioning for the brat in the red"? Thank you!
theatreauditionhelp theatreauditionhelp Said:

You’re probably a Mezzo.
Here’s a few songs that could help!
I’m finding songs that younger characters sing :)

Welcome to the World- Jon and Jen
Woe is Me or I Speak Six Languages- Spelling Bee
If Mama Was Married- Gypsy (careful to not sound bratty)
The Glamorous Life- A Little Night Music (this one screams Little Red though haha)
The Miller’s Son-  A Little Night Music

If these still scream ‘Little Red’, resubmit :)

Hey I'm having auditions for All Shook Up in about two-ish months and I'm going for the part of Lorraine, except, I'm not African-American, I'm Mexican (but seriously look Middle-Eastern) but there aren't many in our theatre department and the girls who I have talked to aren't auditioning. I have a pretty soulful voice and think I could pull off the singing. I'm a mezzo, are there any suggestions of songs? I was thinking the first part of "Skid Row" from Little Shop.
theatreauditionhelp theatreauditionhelp Said:

Since ‘All Shook Up’ is an Elvis Presley jukebox musical, try to find songs from the fifties.

Skid Row- Not bad! I recommend this for you!

Try:
Big Blonde and Beautiful or
Little Inez’s part in ‘Run and Tell That’
or The New Girl In Town from Hairspray
It Won’t Be Long Now- In the Heights
Brand New You- 13
One Boy- Bye Bye Birdie

Hope this helps!

I wrote yesterday about my daughter's (age 11) Sunday in the Park audition. A follow-up: she is very familiar with Castle in the Cloud which you recommended. She just auditioned for Les Mis and was cast as Young Eponine. But she prefers to sing that more as a soprano than as a mezzo. She loves the song and would love to audition with it, but do you think it's OK if she sings it higher when they want a mezzo? I don't really know Sunday in the Park, so I don't know what Louise sings (no solo? :(
theatreauditionhelp theatreauditionhelp Said:

From what I know, the character doesn’t sing a song in the show. If she feels comfortable with Castle on a Cloud, then I think that would be best.

This is the girl that asked about songs for Little Women. I just want to say THANK YOU!!!! I have been stressing out for the past 2 months because I couldn't find a song that was good for me, and I had totally forgotten about the song Home. I think I have found my audition song!!! :D THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! :)

You are so welcome hun!!

Do you have any advice on characterization?
theatreauditionhelp theatreauditionhelp Said:

Let go.  Don’t think about what line comes next, think how your character would think.  Study the kind of person they are, like if you’re playing a witch, read fairy tales and try to put yourself in their shoes, see things the way they see them, make your mind see those things as logical.  A lot of acting is psychology.  In order to BE another person, you have to understand people and be able to replicate it on stage.

You recommend "Also, ANY inappropriate material is generally a no-no. Obviously this does not mean “hell”, “damn” and “crap”. But strong sexual references, offensive slurs and strong profanity is something to avoid." I think All That Jazz from Chicago is severely sexual, and yet it's still listed.
theatreauditionhelp theatreauditionhelp Said:

I’m going to pretty much copy and paste what Andrew wrote.

The list was made by co-admin Winceline who notes, I believe, that those songs are just songs that are in that voice part. I’m not sure if that is true, but I remember it being so. In any case, if there is a crossover of a song-list, and the no-no list, no-no list wins. The others are lists merely of songs for specific criteria. If you don’t know, feel free to ask!

Hi, I'm a mezzo and I'm auditioning for the role of Jeanie in HAIR. My audition is on June 9th, and I really want something fun that I can act to to make my personality pop. I can also sing alto parts, but because Jeanie is a higher-belt part I want something I can belt. Thank you!
theatreauditionhelp theatreauditionhelp Said:

Adelaide’s Lament- Guys and Dolls
Look for songs that Audrey sings in Little Shop (‘Somewhere that’s Green’ is a good example)

Find a musical that showcases characters with the nasally voice type. That would ROCK!

Hope this helps!

My daughter is auditioning on Sunday for Sunday in the Park with George (as Louise). The part is Mezzo - she's a mezzo/soprano. They want her to a ballad musical theater song not from the show, one that tells a story, clearly creates a character and shows-off both singing and acting skills. She doesn't want to do a love song, and we've been struggling to find good ballads that fit the description - so far have only "Maybe" and Tarzan's "You'll Be in My Heart" as options. Any good ideas?
theatreauditionhelp theatreauditionhelp Said:

Sunday in the Park w/ George is a cute little show :)

Maybe- TONS of young girls are going to audition with this song, I do not recommend it, but i guess it is a possibility since Louise doesn’t actually sing solos in the show.

You’ll Be In My Heart- I would not recommend this song either. It’s not a good song to audition with for this musical.

I’m assuming that your daughter is 12?
Castle On a Cloud- Les Mis (but lots of kids may audition with this)
Notice Me Horton- Seussical
My New Philosophy- You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown (tends to be overdone)
The Girl I Mean to Be- Secret Garden

I hope this helps! Tell her to ‘break a leg’ for me!

I am auditioning for the part of Shelley in Evil Dead the Musical. I need an audition song that would fall within her range? Any suggestions?
theatreauditionhelp theatreauditionhelp Said:

I haven’t heard of this one yet!

It seems really….creepy, like it’s a step away from being heavy metal but it’s not…haha

Look at songs from Rocky Horror Picture Show, Repo The Genetic Opera, and possibly Shock Treatment.

It’s nighttime for me and i’m terrified from watching mild horror films like ‘The Sixth Sense’ and ‘Signs’, so unfortunately I’m too scared to listen to the albums to find a song that matches Shelly’s voice, but again I did narrow it down to a few shows that you could check out.

I’m just easily terrified, but I hope you get something out of this!
-Steph

For the anon that wanted a song, there's plenty of options. Open up an Elvis piano book; "I Got A Lot Of Livin' To Do" from Bye Bye Birdie is good. "Crazy" by Patsy Cline is another great one. I'm singing "Earth Angel" for my audition for All Shook Up. Best of luck~!

Hey! I'm auditioning for "Annie, Get Your Gun" in three weeks and I was thinking of auditioning either for Frank Butler or Tommy Keeler. Although I am a high tenor, if I warm up and stay away from the high notes I can hit a low A. Any song suggestions? Also Tommy is a dancing part right? Been dancing since I was four and I'm now 18 :) Thanks!
theatreauditionhelp theatreauditionhelp Said:

I personally was never a huge fan of this musical, but I’ll do my best to help you out!

Luck Be a Lady- Guys and Dolls
(as corny as it sounds) Oh What a Beautiful Mornin- Oklahoma
Almost Like Being in Love- Brigadoon
A Little Bit of Luck- My Fair Lady

I’m about 90% sure that Tommy is a dancing part, since he doesn’t sing much in the show.

Hope this helps!

Can I get some help looking for College audition songs? I'm auditioning as a transfer because I'm not too happy with where I was accepted. I really didn't know what I wanted so I just auditioned for 5 BFA programs that were HUGE. Not my style! haha At least I got in some place! I'm a Soprano (F3-Eb6) and my belt is up to D5. I was thinking Your Daddy's Son from Ragtime, Dyin' Ain't so Bad from Bonnie and Clyde but idk. gah I want to know em dead because its hard to get in as a transfer!
theatreauditionhelp theatreauditionhelp Said:

College audition huh?

Your Daddy’s Son- It’s low considering that you’re a soprano. It’s also really slow. If you can belt ‘son’ that would be great.

Ain’t So Bad- Bonnie and Clyde just recently ended on broadway. I wouldn’t recommend doing it for that reason

Some songs that I think will be wonderful for college auditions wold be…
The Simple Joys of Maidenhood- Camelot
A Little Bit in Love- Wonderful Town
If you think that you can pull of Glitter and Be Gay AMAZINGLY, do it.
Poor Wondering One- Pirates of Penzance
I personally love Girl in 14G, but I don’t recommend it as much as the above. It showcases great acting style and voice if done correctly.

Don’t do any songs from Sweeney Todd, PhantomOTO or (obviously) Les Mis.

Break a Leg!!
